10 More US Soccer Scholarships for Grenadian Footballers in 2008
MONDAY, APRIL 14TH 2008 - Marlon Glean, former Grenada National Footballer and Director of the Marlon Glean Soccer Camp and Marlon Glean Soccer Scholarship Programme has successfully secured – so far - ten (10) more scholarships for Grenadian footballers to study and play in colleges in the United Sates of America, including Grenadian female soccer players.
The Marlon Glean Soccer Scholarship Programme and Deslyn Langaigne of Victoria, St. Mark’s made history in 2008 being the first such organisation to – firstly - obtain a football scholarship for a female Grenadian player and – secondly - by Deslyn being the first Grenadian female player to travel to the US to play and study, respectfully. Coming out of a coaching session during the 3rd Annual Marlon Glean Soccer Camp, Deslyn left Grenada in January and is currently attending Hinds Community College in the state of Mississippi.
The other players who are earmarked to travel by August of this year are Cudel Collins, Nikel Paul and Steven Peters of St. Mark’s who will be joining Grenadian Ken Searles, Ian Perrotte and Akinson Neckles at Marshalltown Community College; and Andre Charles of Grand Anse, St. George’s, Kwan Baptiste of Chantimelle, St. Patrick’s, and Kennis Paul and Schevon Joseph of Gouyave, St. John’s will attend the University of South Carolina – Aiken. The Marlon Glean Soccer Scholarship programme is in the process of finalising scholarship awards for Kemmile Bristol, and Kishani Thomas who will become the second female Grenadian player to receive such learning-and-playing opportunities. Each of the above-mentioned players is either past-participants of the Marlon Glean Soccer Camp or would’ve assisted with coaching at some point, and even both.
The main objective of the Marlon Glean Scholarship programme is to continue providing support to Grenadian youth - especially those engaged in the sport of Football. According to Marlon Glean, Founder of the scholarship programme, “my personal ambition over the past seven (7) years has been to open doors of educational opportunities to young, talented individuals in the area of sports. This ambition has lead to the formation of the Marlon Glean Soccer Scholarship Programme (MGSSP) in 2001 in which over forty (40) students has since attained scholarships; all of whom continue to earn degrees in various fields and start career-paths they most likely would have never attained without their sporting talent playing a critical role in, firstly, being accepted to a university, and secondly - but more importantly – being provided with full financial assistance for their tuition and other expenses”.
Currently, Grenadian Alister Flemming and Kerry Bristow are on soccer scholarships at West Virginia Wesleyan College. Glean has also successfully secured a scholarship for Mid-fielder Luke Blakely of Leicester, England who has been sharing fields with Searles and Perrotte at Marshalltown Community College. This year saw three (3) of the eight (8) teams in the National Junior College Finals having five (5) Grenadian players from the Marlon Glean Soccer Scholarship Programme.
Within the last two (2) years, three (3) of the Marlon Glean Soccer Scholarship Programme recipients, Joel Forde and Sherwin Merryman successfully completed Bachelor’s Degrees in Business Administration from Southern New Hampshire University; and Kerry Wilson with a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration from West Virginia Wesleyan College. Ricky Morris and Ashton Henry will be graduating from American International College and Hartwick College respectfully in May of this year with Bachelor’s Degrees in Business Administration.

Police at the Gouyave Police Station on Christmas night detained a 47 year old man whom relatives, friends and neighbors of Maran, in St. John's identified as the cold blooded gunman/murderer, that shot and killed local businessman Ricky Cosley Beharry.
Gunman/Murder accused, Kelvin Antoine, aka” Pussy”, of Black Bay in St. John’s according to reports was found holding on to his point three eight (.38) revolver when law enforcement officers responded to the frantic phone call of the victim’s relatives on Christmas night.
Reports reaching our news desk indicated that, sometime after 6:00pm the accused was phoned by one of his daughters who complained of an incident between herself and her step-father (Beharry).
It is believed that, Antoine not being happy by the call, hastily drove some five miles from his Black Bay home up to Maran where he confronted Beharry.
Police investigators are said to be working with the theory that both men had exchange a few bitter and threatening words for about five to ten to minutes before Antoine left Beharry’s premises in an angry mood.
The boys on the block and eye witnesses confirmed early reports that Antoine was seen and heard leaving the Beharry’s premises and when he got to the top of the hill said he was not satisfied, then turn around and went back towards the Beharry’s.
They claimed that within minutes of the gunman returning to Beharry’s home, they heard a loud explosion and saw some immediate neighbors running saying, “ Pussy shoot Cosley”.
Some immediate residents said the accused confronted Beharry holding his (.38) revolver in his right hand and shot him in the Chest at what appeared to be close range.
Reporters also gathered that the gun shot victim was in his yard a few steps from his front door. Beharry upon being shot felled face down to the ground where he died instantly.
A gun wielding accused eye witnesses said stood speechless in shock, not believing that he had just shot killed Beharry.
It is not clear weather or not the deceased was armed, although there are conflicting reports that Beharry had a Cutlass in his possession.
However most people are of the view that the man who was described as cool and quiet was shot in front of his common law wife, relatives and friends at his home.
Beharry is said to be the owner/operator of a self start home made Ice-cream business is the cousin of Grenadian/British War Veteran Private Johnson Beharry.
Residents of Maran commenting on the fatal shooting described “Pussy” as a cold hearted, brutal and called for justice.
Beharry’s body was later examined and pronounced dead, by former Chief Medical Officer (CMO), in the Ministry of Health Dr. Roger Radix who was somewhere in the area, before it the was removed by local undertakers hours later.
Meanwhile, at about 1:00pm on Wednesday December 26, (Boxing Day), prominent Criminal Defense Lawyer Derick Sylvester visited Antoine at the Gouyave Police Station where he also met with his client’s common law wife and daughter Risha Simon, a Police Constable stationed at the Victoria Police Station.
Sylvester who spent almost two hours with his client when asked about the laying of charges said ,the Police have not formerly charged his client.
Police insiders at the Gouyave Police Station however hinted that Antoine can be charged as late as Boxing night or early the following day in order to be brought to the Gouyave Magistrate’s Court on Friday morning.
