THE 90’S: Although Sparklers domination in Grenada started in the early 90’s the team was organized in the 1970’s by Naka Joseph, Victor Peters, Claude Bain and Wesley Thomas. The other players to joined the team were Frank Scott, Doraine Marshall and Claney Joseph. Later Rapheal Paul, Terry George and Lincoln “basket” Walker joined the team.
In 1989 saw Sparklers making that big step to represent St. John’s in the Clico Knockout Tournament that was held at the Cuthbert Peters Complex hard court. That tournament was won by Barclays Eagles(uptown rebels) which was led by Chrispin “bugman”Hypolite/Dexter “super” James and coached by Nat Simpson. Sparklers was knocked out at the semi final stage.
Sparklers bounced back 1991 winning the National Championship on the Carenage Basketball Court. Sparklers then went on to win seven consecutive National Championships 1991 – 1996 defeating teams like Labaye Rebels,76ers,Grandanse,Young Generation etc.
Players that contributed to that domination were Terry”I shark” George ,Peter “shalla” Andrews, Kenroy John, Dave Marquez, Hess Charles, Mario Walker, Vigil Harris, Mitch Phillip, Kelvin Charles, Javon Suralie, Garvin Taylor, Henry”couva”Frederick, Roger Glean,Wayne Nimrod, Jess Logie, Delshonda Billy, Nydanu Joseph.
Sparklers Terry George was the lone player from the team to represent Grenada in 1990, by 1996 Sparklers had 6 players on the national team roster.
Not only the basketball players that were able to reach national prominence from the parish but the referees and table officials were able to achieve much. referee Lincoln “basket” Walker was able to ref at the Windwards and Caribbean basketball championships In 1997 Lennox “ratty” Thomas our medic and Carnice “sister” Frederick our No 1 supporter.
